Core: Change Branded Name

Introduction

This document explains the process for changing a branded name on a Core website. Notes on this document:

  • This process assumes Web Builder has submitted a Customer Care ticket. IF Customer Care is completing the task without the initiation of a Web Builder, Customer Care should assume the role of the Web Builder.

  • This article assumes that the new branded name is acceptable and has been approved by the SEO Team (see SEO Responsibilities below). There are requirements for a locations branded name that will dramatically affect a locations organic traffic and rankings. If the SEO strategy team has not weighed in on the validity of the new branded name, they should do so before the project begins.

Client Responsibilities

  1. If the client is using Rep Manager, client should update their Branded Name in their reviews sites: Yelp, Apartment Ratings, Caring.com, SeniorAdviser.com, Yahoo, Bing, and forward the revised URL's to the PM.

Project Manager Responsibilities

  1. Confirm with the client the exact text for Branded Name

  2. Obtain updated logo

  3. If the client is using Rep Manager, ensure the client updates their Branded Name in their reviews sites: Yelp, Apartment Ratings, Caring.com, SeniorAdviser.com, Yahoo, Bing (Tyler Herrick advised 3/1/13 that SEO updates branded name on the Google+ page, but not the other Reviews sources). Then, get the revised URL's for the reviews sites from the client.

  4. If the domain name is also being changed, see Process for changing the secondary domain name for a location

Project Manager or Web Builder Responsibilities

  1. Audit site and determine all tasks to be completed:

    1. Logo / Image Updates

      1. Edit all interior pages (including alt text for image files, and page names, if necessary) and location home pages for links or mention of old branded name (update Description tab & Driving Directions tab in Client Center)

      2. Edit home page slide show and Photo Gallery page photos in Work with Photos/Assets (update Alt Text or Title where branded name is referenced)

      3. Change title tags, meta descriptions, meta keywords (applies to interior pages), but only if the branded name is hard-coded rather than widgeted, and only if exact branded name being used

      4. If there are any hard coded links (for example, United Stor-All had a footer nav override), make sure to have a developer update them.

    2. Update inheritable values

      1. Change Inheritable Values (applies to homepage), but only if the branded name is hard-coded

    3. Update branded name in copy on all pages

    4. Update branded name on Directions tab

    5. Update any alt text using the old branded name

    6. Update Page titles, meta descriptions, and H1’s if they use the old branded name

    7. Check for any hard coded links (for example, United Stor-All had a footer nav override), make sure to have a developer update them.

    8. Update inheritable values if the branded name is hard-coded rather than widgeted

  2. Scrape site for redirects and enter redirects after slug change & nginx is restarted (after the Customer Care ticket has been completed)

  3. Update Client Center fields: Branded Name and Store Name

    1. Note: permissions to edit these fields are restricted and can be updated by a Senior Web Builder or through a Customer Care ticket.

  4. If the site uses the menu tree for navigation, the menu tree should be deleted and rebuilt. Though the redirects should handle this, it's a good practice to ensure the menu links are accurate. After the slug changes have been made and nginx restarted, use the following steps to rebuild the menu (2/13/15 Note: there is an existing PT Story that will allow an Engineer to systematically rebuild the menu tree, including main nav items as well as sub-nav items - EDC unknown):

    1. Access Work With Menus (menu tree) for the location

    2. For the main menu, loc_nav, click the Edit This Menu icon

    3. In the right pane of the open popup, right-click the loc_nav folder, click  Edit Item, change Name field to loc_nav_TEST, click the Submit button

    4. For the main menu, loc_nav, click the Copy This Menu icon, then in the popup box, enter the store ID of next location (open a second session of the Client Center to get the store ID of the next location), click Ok

    5. Ensure the copied menu is displaying in Work With Menus for the next location

    6. For the main menu of the original location, loc_nav, click the Delete This Menu icon

    7. For the TEST menu of the next location, loc_nav_TEST, click the Copy This Menu icon, then in the popup box, enter the store ID of the original location, click Ok

    8. For the original location, click the Edit This Menu icon, then change the menu name back to loc_nav, click the Submit button

    9. For the next location, click the Delete This Menu icon

  5. Submit Customer Care ticket (Customer Care Specialist) to update Rep Manager, SEO & Paid. CC the SEO & Paid Analysts.

    1. Enter Subject: Pro Services Branded Name Change for XXX (insert client name). For Rep Manager purposes, list the revised review site URL's in the ticket, and request Customer Care update the review site URL's in Rep Manager. Note: the branded name does not need to be manually updated in 360, because it is being pulled nightly, via a script, from core (per John Ellis 9/16/14).

  6. Submit Customer Care ticket to update Voicestar campaigns and playfiles

  7. If the branded name change is a client branded name change, as opposed to a location branded name change, change Client Branded Name field at the client level, both Staging and Core (the Configurator pulls its info in from Demo, which pulls from Staging).

  8. If the client uses a template that uses the Configurator:

    1. Change the Client Branded Name in the Configurator

    2. Re-deploy the Configurator to the new client branded name.

  9. Confirm the changes on the live site.
